Wheels
for August 12 by Mollie
Barney
Let there be no doubt: Gary Molberg loves his job
and he loves Amarilo. And that's as it should be,
given that for the past 13 years he has served as president of
the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce. Gary touted the city's
teamwork and its willingness to pull together as a reason why
Amarillo has avoided much of the recent economic tumult. Gary
pointed out that the chamber does not live on members' dues
alone, that it relies heavily on "non-member events" to help
pay the bills. He cited the success of such events as the
annual Chamber BBQ, the chamber's golf tournament (which could
be largest single-day golf tournament in Texas) and the Summer
Fiesta. Gary said he could talk a long time about Amarillo,
but time didn't allow him to do so. But thanks for the
positive report, Gary, about Amarillo. Keep up the great work
on the city's behalf.
President Jake Richards got to perform the most
pleasant task possible when he welcome two new
members to the Rotary Club of Amarillo. One new member isn't
so new: He is former Club President-elect Bill
Archinal, who has moved back to Amarillo after being
away for a few years in San Antonio. Bill -- who sold his home
health care business -- is now working in oil and gas
investments for Rushing Oil & Gas Investments, which
coincides with Bill's classification. Pam
Rushing introduced Bill to the club. Welcome back,
Bill. And President Richards introduced Bernard
Johnson, executive director at Catholic Family
Services, as a new member. Bernard has served as CFS boss for
the past three years. He speaks several languages, including
Chinese, Portugese, Spanish and French. Welcome to the club,
Bernard.
Moving day is coming up for the Rotary Club of
Amarillo office. It falls on Monday, Aug. 23.
Gina Rodriguez is moving the office from 2200
W. Seventh, to 301 S. Polk in downtown Amarillo. "We need a
pickup and four strong guys. Any volunteers?" Gina asks. The
move begins around 9 a.m. on Aug. 23. Gina is quite excited
about the move, as it puts the Rotary office into a nicer
location downtown.
Our Rotary Hold Up concludes this coming
week. It's been a great run this year. We've spread a
little Panhandle cheer to visitors from the UK, as well as the
four corners of the United States of America. Thanks to all
the Rotary Club hosts who signed up to show our visitors
great time. Let's do it again next year!
Two more great programs are on tap: Mayor Debra
McCartt is speaking to us on Aug. 19; U.S.
Rep. Mac Thornberry is here the following
Thursday. Be sure to attend. And be sure to urge our fellow
Rotarians to attend.
Erv Bergen drew the 5 of Hearts. So, the
Rotary Foundation pot keeps growing.
Thanks this week go to: Doyle Moore, song
leader; Bob Dunstan, invocation; Bob
Cowan, introduction of guests and visiting Rotarians;
Jeff Neely and Dale Bippus,
greeters; John Tyson, ticket sales; and
Bob Murray, our program chairman for
August.
